¡Rob!, Rob Schneider’s Show About Marrying Into A Mexican Family, To Air

As a good friend of mine put it earlier, there’s a 0% chance that ¡Rob!, a new CBS sitcom featuring Rob Schneider, will not be offensive. The premise of the show is as follows: Schneider’s character, a long-time bachelor meets, falls in love, and marries a Mexican woman (played by Puerto Rican actress Nadine Velazquez*). Of course, when you wed someone of Mexican descent, you marry their whole family as well!

We haven’t seen a preview of ¡Rob!, but if the cast is any indication, the show is going to be hilarious. And by hilarious, we mean offensive as all hell. Amongst the cast members are Cheech Marin and Eugenio Derbez. Cheech needs no introduction, and if you’re not familiar with the latter, he’s been one of Mexico’s most popular comedians (notice how we said popular, not funniest) of the last 20 years. To provide some context, he gave voice to “Donkey” in the Spanish versions of the Shrek films.

But maybe we’re overreacting. Maybe Schneider will do a great job at tackling the issues that arise from interracial marriages. Perhaps this sitcom will be a trailblazer that drastically changes how minorities are portrayed in mainstream television. After all, Schneider is basing this on his own personal experience.

Oh wait, we’re talking about the guy who did this:

And the show will air on a network whose only ethnic character in its three most popular sitcoms is a stereotype of an Indian (Kunal Nayyar from The Big Bang Theory).  Well, crap. Is it too late to ask for George Lopez back?

*Not that we particularly care that Nadine is Puerto Rican, because a working Latino actor’s a working Latino actor, right? But did they at least try?
