2014 Grammys Wrap-up

The 2014 Grammy’s were held last night and all of the music industry came out in their Sunday best. The night was particularly good to French robots Daft Punk and rapper and flashy suit wearers Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. Daft Punk received album of the year for Random Access Memories, record of the year for Get Lucky, best pop duo, and best electronica. Not bad for a couple of cyborgs from Frenchyland. Macklemore’s wins were more controversial. They took home best new artist, best rap album, best rap song, and best rap performance. This pissed off Twitter for a variety of reasons as people took to their smartphones to discuss their disapproval. Part of the problem is that Macklemore is seen by some as a guy who has profited off of appropriating other people’s cultures and problems and making them his own, namely his marriage equality song Same Love. Some think it’s also a sign of the general racism of the Grammy voters that they wouldn’t even have paid attention to the rap category if Macklemore wasn’t White. Also a lot of people just think he’s a whack ass rapper and doesn’t belong in the category.

In the Latin categories, the awesome La Santa Cecilia won best Latin rock for Trenta Dias. Draco Rosa won for best Latin pop album for Vida and the delightful Pacific Mambo Orchestra won best Latin tropical for their self-titled album. Finally, Mariachi Divas De Cindy Shea won for best regional Mexican for their album A Mi Manera.

The night also had memorable performances by Metallica playing their legendary song One as well as a reunion of surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Beyoncé tore it up with her husband Jay Z in an outfit that was hotter than the Houston summers we both grew up enduring. 17 year old New Zealand weird girl Lorde performed a twitchy rendition of her hit Royals. The most controversial performance was, again, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis when they performed their song Same Love while Queen Latifah married 34 couples some of whom were of the same sex. Madonna also joined them while dressed like Boss Hogg from The Dukes of Hazard. While that’s very nice and all…why Queen Latifah? Could they not get Oprah or something? Is she an ordained minister in the Church of Maybelline or something?
