2018 Oscars: Chile Takes Best Foreign Film for A Fantastic Woman

The film A Fantastic Woman has won the Oscar for Best Foreign language film at the 90th Academy Awards. This is only the second Chilean film nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, and it would be the first to win. The previous contender was five years ago with Pablo Larrian’s docudrama “No” (2012)

A Fantastic Woman follows Marina, a transgender woman played by Daniel Vega, whose lover dies suddenly, leaving her in a tense conflict with his surviving family.

A Fantastic Woman also took home Honors on the festival circuit, winning a Silver Bear for best screenplay at the Berlin film festival. At Sunday’s ceremony, Vega became the first openly transgender person to present an award at the Oscars.

Felicidades to the director Sebastián Lelio y Chile!
