Alex Rodriguez Closes In On Willy May’s Record

Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez is closing in on Willie Mays’ homerun record with his 659th hit. That would make him in fourth place with the most homeruns. That’s a pretty amazing achievement by any standards. So, why aren’t the Yankees making a big deal out of it. Well, it has to do with something in A-Rod’s contract. He has a 30 million dollar marketing agreement for him to receive 6 million for up to five “achievements”. This would certainly constitute and achievement, don’t you think? But the Yankees don’t want to pay that, because it’s 6 million dollars. The other reason is that right now A-Rod is damaged goods given his reputation for using performance enhancing drugs. This is a way for the team to punish him. Though I guarantee you that he will sue them for it. And the truth is that legally the Yankees don’t have a leg to stand on.

That is unless there is a morality clause in A-Rod’s contract. Then they could say that given his recent suspension and the allegations of his drug use that he doesn’t deserve the money. That’s the only way I can see them getting out of it. It will be interesting to see what happens.
