Canelo Alvarez Signs $365 Million Contract

For 45 years HBO has been the home to most of the biggest fights in boxing, but everything must come to an end. At the end of the year HBO will no longer be in the sports market and will stop showing anything relating to sports including boxing.

As the old saying goes, as one door closes, another one opens. Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions have landed a very lucrative deal with the new sports streaming service DAZN. In a record-shattering deal Canelo Alvarez signed a 5 year, 11 fight deal worth a minimum of $365 million with DAZN.

His first fight in his new deal will start with his move up to super middleweight and fight Rocky Fielding on Dec 15 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Alvarez’s deal is the richest athlete contract in sports history, beating out the 113-year, $325 million deal with the New York Yankees and slugger Giancarlo Stanton back in 2014.

“Canelo is the highest-paid athlete in the world. He’s extremely happy,” De La Hoya told ESPN after Alvarez signed.

The deal with Golden Boy also will give DAZN access to the roughly 7,000-hour library of Golden Boy’s fights, including from De La Hoya’s Hall of Fame career. Golden Boy Media and Entertainment also will produce various shoulder programs to complement the live events.

Looks like both Oscar de La Hoya and Canelo just got paid!
