Catherine Cortez Masto Becomes The First Latina Senator

After last night’s stunning victory by Donald Trump many Latinos are terrified. But there is a silver lining. Catherine Cortez Masto became the first Latina to be elected to the senate. It seems unbelievable that this is the case, but it is. She was elected in Nevada when she beat Republican Joe Heck 49% to 44%. She said in her victory speech,

“I want you to know this isn’t my win, it is our win. We did this together. As I look at the room right now, I can see there is just an incredible, incredible group of people out here. The multicolored fabric of Nevada, the diversity here, is our strength and I can see from your faces that we are going to continue to be strong and continue to fight for our families, for our future — here in Nevada and across this country.”

She has promised to be a voice for the Latino community in the senate and by all accounts she is an able and intelligent advocate. I have no doubt that she will do her best but she has a tough road ahead. Republicans control both houses of congress, the White House, and soon the Supreme Court. It will be a tough road to pass legislation that benefits Latinos in the current political climate that is so very anti-Latino. But if anyone can do it, it’s Cortez Masto.
