Despacito is No. 1 Song In America

A wall may divide the United States and Latin America but nothing can stop this mega hit from having success in the US. La cancion “Despacito” is number 1 on the Billboard’s Hot 100 for the third week in a row. This is big since there hasn’t been a Spanish language song in the top spot since “Macarena” in 1996.

You may think Despacito is another gimmicky one hit wonder dance song from an unknown artist. Think again, Latin music veterans Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee along with Justin Bieber, in the
re-mix version, bring this song to life.

The hit song is not only a hit in the music industry but it has gone viral with fans making video parodies. You can find everything from Despedito, Asadito and my favorite Elotito, oh que rico, all re-working the lyrics and adding them to the song.

I think this craze is great especially in the times we are living with so much discrimination and with the country divided. Daddy Yankee credits music as a universal language, bringing people together regardless of background or skin color. “People are more receptive to learn … connect and exchange their opinions in the digital world and learn more from one another.”

Despacito is definitely bringing people together, even none Spanish speaking music fans are joining the party and learning some Spanish along the way.
