Donald Trump Doesn’t Care About Puerto Rico

It’s been a week since hurricane Maria tore through Puerto Rico leaving devastation in its wake. All these days later and there is still no electricity on the island. Food is getting scarce, medical supplies are low, and people are running out of cash. Puerto Rican governor Ricardo Rosselló has called it a “humanitarian crisis” and that the hurricane is “probably the single biggest hurricane catastrophe in the history of the U.S.” He has also said that barely a trickle of the aid he requested from the U.S. government has been sent. So, what gives?

What did president Trump have to say about this crisis happening to United States citizens? He talked about the money Puerto Rico owes Wall Street. He tweeted,

“Texas & Florida are doing great but Puerto Rico, which was already suffering from broken infrastructure & massive debt, is in deep trouble. All available resources, including the military, are being marshaled to save lives. We have been really treated very, very nicely by the governor and everyone else”Much of the island was destroyed, with billions of dollars owed to Wall Street and the banks which, sadly, must be dealt with…It’s old electrical grid, which was in terrible shape, was devastated. Much of the Island was destroyed, with billions of dollars….”

Umm, OK. He later went on to talk about how he was praised by the governor for his efforts,

“The governor of Puerto Rico was so thankful for the great job that we’re doing. It’s the most difficult job because it’s on an island in the middle of the ocean. It’s out in the ocean. You can’t just drive your trucks there from other states.”

It is an island indeed, Mr. President. So, why hasn’t he done more? Maybe he wasn’t aware of it before this week but Puerto Ricans are just as much United States citizens as the people in Florida and Texas who were also effected by hurricanes in the last few months. He isn’t even going down there until Tuesday. The only reasonable explanation, given Donald Trump’s attitude towards Latinos, is that he doesn’t care because Puerto Ricans are not White. He doesn’t care because Puerto Ricans on the mainland didn’t vote for him en masse. He doesn’t care because if Puerto Rico were made a state it would surely go Democrat. He doesn’t care, in effect, because Puerto Ricans can’t do anything for him and it’s all about him.
