Fruit With Chili Seasoning Makes Life Worth Living


Last night my wife and I cut up a melon and had plenty left over until today. It was then that it occurred to me that I had all the ingredients I needed to make my favorite fruit snack: fruit with Tajin and lime. As Latinos I think we all know what I’m talking about, especially if like me you grew up around Mexicans. For it is our brothers from South of the Border that perfected this treat. When I was a little kid in Mexico, and later in Texas, I used to indulge my love of oranges and pineapple with chili powder, salt, and lime. Then I grew up and moved to New York City and for many years didn’t eat this treat. This in spite of the fact that one neighborhood over, Sunset Park, is full of people selling spicy fruit in the summer.

The key is to spritz the fruit with lime before you put the seasoning on it. Why? The citric acid in the lime brings out the natural sweetness in the fruit  and gives the Tajin something to cling to. So as the hot ass summer looms and we’re all looking for a low calorie refreshing snack, get yourself some Tajin, lime, and fruit and eat it!
