Giant Crucifix Dedicated to Pope John Paul II Kills A Man

A 100 foot crucifix collapsed during a ceremony in northern Italy near the village of Cevo, killing a 21 year old man.  The giant curved crucifix holding a statue of Jesus weighing 1,320 lbs, was designed by sculptor Enrrico Job to commemorate the Pope’s visit to the area in 1998.

The victim was part of a visiting group of Catholics, according to eye witness, when the cross began to fall the victim ran the wrong way and was crushed by the crucifix. The tragedy comes days before Pope John Paul II is to be canonized as a saint in Rome.

This is not the first time a crucifix kills a person in Italy. in 2004, a 72 year old women was crushed to death by a 7 foot tall metal crucifix in the south part of Italy in the town of Sant’Onofrio.
