Happy Cesar Chavez Day

Today is Cesar Chavez Day, the date set aside to remember one of the greatest Latino leaders ever. Cesar Chavez was a tireless crusader for the working man, the farm worker that got little to know respect. If you think that agricultural workers and undocumented laborers have it bad today, it was a hell of a lot worse when Cesar Chavez was around. He dealt with racism, injury, threats, jail time, with passive resistance. He’s been called the Mexican Martin Luther King and that’s not too much of a stretch. Chavez has been in the news lately because of the release of a biopic directed by Diego Luna. The filmmakers managed to screen it in the White House for President Obama. Sadly, as Diego himself discovered, too few people remember Chavez’s legacy today. It’s important for all Americans to live by his example but it is doubly crucial that the Latinos of today take his words to heart.

“In this world it is possible to achieve great material wealth, to live an opulent life. But a life built upon those things alone leaves a shallow legacy. In the end, we will be judged by other standards.” – Cesar Chavez

“When we are really honest with ourselves we must admit that our lives are all that really belong to us. So, it how we use our lives that determines what kind of men we are. It is my deepest belief that only by giving our lives do we find life.” – Cesar Chavez
