Happy Three Kings Day From Tu Vez!

Tomorrow is Three Kings Day or El Dia De Los Reyes Magos. It’s when we commemorate the day, according to the Gospels, that the three magi visiting the baby Jesus. They brought him gifts of frankincense, gold, and myrrh (the ancient Middle Eastern equivalent of Vasoline). I guess that’s to help with diaper rash? Either way we remember this blessed event by getting presents for the second time in less than a month. We Latinos have our problems, (poverty, racism, George Lopez, etc), but we get the equivalent of two Christmases. Unlike the secularized Christmas of today, Three Kings Day is still a very religious holiday. After all, Santa and his reindeer aren’t in the Bible…at least…I don’t think so. It’s been a while since I read it.

In some countries kids leave hay out for the three king’s camels to eat. It’s like leaving cookies for Santa Claus only your dad can’t eat the hay while he puts your toys together. For a lot of people Three Kings Day is a bit of a let down present wise. In some countries it’s traditional to give practical gifts like new socks and underwear or school supplies. Where is the fun in that? I want an Xbox One not some Fruit of the Looms. Still, I guess it’s better than nothing. I remember growing up I would always get cast as one of the wisemen in the school Christmas play, (I went to a Catholic school). So, on Three Kings Day I would often take out my bright green sateen robe, crown, and fake beard and wear it around the house. Yes, I was a weird child.
