Jennifer Lopez Receives GLAAD Award

Jennifer Lopez was honored by the LGBT rights group GLAAD with their Vanguard Award. J-Lo has been an outspoken advocate for gay rights for many years. She is also the executive producer of the ABC Family TV series The Fosters which centers around a lesbian couple bringing up their children. Jenn’s work for gay rights is a rarity in the Latino entertainment world. Unfortunately, the machismo B.S. of the past is still very much a part of our culture. The entertainment business is generally pretty pro-gay rights but many Latino stars keep quiet as to not scare off their sometimes uptight audience. Of course, when you are as big as Jenn and have had her crossover success you can pretty much do whatever you want. I think the day will come when it will be OK for non-crossover stars to come out in favor of gay rights without a bunch of pendejos threatening to not buy their records.

I look forward to an all gay Mexican band singing rancheras in matching mariachi costumes or a salsa band leader that doesn’t have to change the pronouns in their songs. That will be a sight to see.
