Journalist Jose Antonio Vargas Held At U.S. Border

Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas is being detained at the U.S. border in McAllen, TX. Vargas, who is an undocumented immigrant from the Philippines, attempted to fly out of the airport using his Filipino passport. When asked if he had a visa, (he did not), he was sent to a border patrol agent who detained him for further questioning. Vargas was in McAllen to cover the growing crisis of undocumented children fleeing increased violence in Central America. Vargas apparently thought he could just get through like normal as he said,

“I feel stupid. I’ve been traveling around the country, visiting 43 states in like 3 years, and I’ve been flying using my Philippine passport. But I’ve never been to the Texas border area. I just figured I could use the passport. But apparently I can’t because border patrol agents check foreign passports.”

We here at Tu Vez think Vargas should be released immediately.

However, I can’t help feeling that this was a set-up. That Vargas went there to tempt fate and get arrested to show how draconian our enforcement laws are. This is especially true since I know for a fact that news agencies received a full press release minutes after Vargas was arrested. I’m not saying that there isn’t validity in the statement he’s trying to make. All I’m saying is that it also smells a little like a publicity stunt.
