Latinos Gain Key Golden Globe Nominations

Director Alfonso Cuaron and our favorite gal Sofia Vergara are among the Latinos that were nominated for Golden Globes this year. Alfonso Cuaron received a best director nomination for his film Gravity, which also got several other nods including best picture. Sofia Vergara was once again nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a TV comedy for her portrayal of Gloria in Modern Family. She’s been nominated 5 years in a row and never won, ditto with the Emmy’s. I don’t know what the problem is. She is friggin’ briliant on the show. Maybe it’s jealousy from all of the bitter a-holes in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Guatemalan actor Oscar Isaac also received a nod for his portrayl of Llewyn Davis in the Coen brother’s Inside Llewyn Davis.

While these nominations are great steps in the right direction, I can’t help but notice that that is three Latinos in a field that, with few exceptions, is still lily white. I suppose that quality is worth more than quantity. After all, best director is a pretty big deal. Still, a little more quantity would be nice too.
