Latinos Win Big At The Grammy’s

It’s true that Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee did not win Song of the Year for Despacito, (which is a total outrage), however many other Latino artists won in a variety of different categories. The man who did win best song and best record was Bruno Mars, who is half-Puerto Rican, so there is that. Residente won best Latin rock, urban or alternative album for his self-titled album Residente. Queen Shakira won best Latin pop album for El Dorado and the legendary salsa legend Ruben Blades won for best tropical album for Salsa Big Band. But those are the Latin music categories so of course Latinos were going to win them. Aida Cuevas won best Mexican regional album for Arriero Somos Versiones Acústicas. But you also have Lin-Manuel Miranda who won best song written for visual media for How Far I’ll Go from the Moana soundtrack.

The other categories were largely dominated by White people except for the rap and “urban” categories that were African-American. It just goes to show there is still a way to go. I think the Grammy people didn’t award Despacito the best song and record because it’s in Spanish and there is no way a Spanish-language song is willing song of the year…even if it WAS the song of the year.
