Leonardo DiCaprio To Play Scarface In New Remake

When I was a kid in the 80’s one movie defined the way many people saw Cubans and that film was the 1983 Scarface. The tale of a Mariel boatlift Cuban who comes to America and becomes a cocaine drug lord in Miami was an instant classic. Now, because Hollywood can’t help itself, Scarface is getting remade starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Tony Montana. Director Brian DePalma says,

“You know when you got a film as successful and as influential as Scarface, there’s this unspoken rule in Hollywood that you’ve got to make a remake and relaunch the story for a new generation. I am not ashamed of this, it’s what we do in Hollywood and it’s a great opportunity to create a new exciting version. This project has been on the drawing board for almost 15 years and I was just about to give up on it until 2013 when I saw The Wolf of Wallstreet in the cinemas and saw Leonardo DiCaprios energy and fire, I knew I wanted him to be Tony Montana. Two years later, we are well into production and are expecting a 2016 release. Working with DiCaprio is a blessing and he is really nailing his role – must be the Italian blood!”

First of all, that movie doesn’t need to be remade. It’s going to pale in comparison with the original. Why make it? Oh yeah, to make money. But what really chaps my hide is the fact that once again they’ve hired a non-Latino to play Tony Montana. I love Al Pacino and his performance was great…except for that accent. He sounded like the Sylvester the Cat version of my uncles. But, I understand that back in the early 1980’s it was a different time and they weren’t concerned with sensitivity to minorities as much. But today there are any number of Latino actors that would be incredible Tony Montanas. What about Benicio Del Toro? Or Diego Luna? Or hell, even Danny Trejo? I bet it didn’t even occur to the filmmakers of this remake to hire a Latino actor. Then again, it wouldn’t be as big of a get as Leonardo. I can’t wait to hear his Cuban accent.
