In what comes as no surprise to anyone, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s groundbreaking musical Hamilton was nominated for 16 Tony Awards. The closest competitor is She Loves Me with 8 nominations. Miranda’s show tells the tale of founding father Alexander Hamilton and his trials and tribulations against rivals Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr through hip-hop. Miranda and co-star Leslie Odom Jr. are both nominated for best actor and Phillipa Soo for best actress as well as several others in supporting roles. There is no doubt in my mind that Hamilton will sweep, winning if not all of the awards, then most of them. Hamilton has transcended the normal bounds of your average Broadway show to become a bonafide cultural phenomenon. I live in New York City and am a theatergoer and I can tell you that more attention has been paid to Hamilton than even your average hit show.

Most Broadway shows are attended by an aging theater public that go see everything and tourists. But Hamilton is all encompassing. You can’t get a ticket, not for a year or more, without spending a ton of cash. I haven’t been able to see it myself though I have listened to the soundtrack and seen clips. It makes me very proud that a Latino has not only broken through in the super White world of theater but has effectively conquered it.
