Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first breakthrough work In The Heights is finally being adapted into a movie. The film will be produced by the Weinstein company. In The Heights won several Tony awards and was a finalist for the Pulitzer prize. It tells the story of several characters living in the northern Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights. The musical blends hip hop, merengue, salsa, and general musical scores. People have been waiting for this to happen since the show closed in 2011. The full plot from reads,

“At the center of the show is Usnavi, a bodega owner who looks after the aging Cuban lady next door, pines for the gorgeous girl working in the neighboring beauty salon and dreams of winning the lottery and escaping to the shores of his native Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, Nina, a childhood friend of Usnavi’s, has returned to the neighborhood from her first year at college with surprising news for her parents, who have spent their life savings on building a better life for their daughter. Ultimately, Usnavi and the residents of the close-knit neighborhood get a dose of what it means to be home.”

This all raises the question of whether Hamilton will also come to theaters in a few years? Will its success on stage translate into big box office numbers?
