Lionel Messi Wins FIFA’s Ballon d’OR. This Is Why

Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi was awarded the FIFA Ballon d’Or earlier today. The 23-year-old Barcelona striker (he’s only 23!), beat out fellow teammates Xavi and Andres Iniesta to win the inaugural award. In previous years, two different awards were given to the best footballer in the world– the FIFA World Player of the Year award and France Football magazine’s Ballon d’ Or– before they were merged into one. Not surprisingly, La Pulga Messi won both of those in 2009.

Some critics felt that the leading soccer organization snubbed Dutch footballer Wesley Snjeider when they kept him off the Ballon d’Or shortlist, but quite frankly it wouldn’t have mattered. Why? Because Messi really is the best in the world. Watch the following highlight compilation and see for yourself.
