Majority Of Americans Favor Housing Child Migrants

An overwhelming majority of Americans favor letting the child migrants that have been arriving in droves at the border into the U.S. In a poll by the Public Religion Research Institute Americans of all political backgrounds mostly favored housing the migrant children. 80% of Democrats and 57% of Republicans polled agreed that the children qualified for refugee status and deserve political asylum. Over the last few months thousands of unaccompanied minors have been traveling up from Central America in order to escape the violence and political turmoil in their native countries. This has caused a major humanitarian crisis as the U.S. tries to figure out the best course of action. Deporting the children would only doom them to return to the same dire conditions that led them to embark on the perilous journey to the U.S. but on the other hand accepting the children with the current resources would put a strain on an already overtaxed system.

Americans are at heart a good and accepting people. We’ve always accepted people who have needed asylum. My own family came here to the United States as refugees in the 60’s. It’s easy to forget sometimes that the majority of Americans aren’t like the vocal minority that is always shouting to keep immigrants out. Xenophobia is patently un-American.
