Man of the Week: Javier Bardem

This was a rough week for Latinos on television. Welcome to the Family, a show about unplanned pregnancy, was cancelled after just three weeks on NBC. However, this has been a great month in the theater. Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity continues to top the box office. Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills took violence to a new level. And Friday, October 25th, we will get to see Javier Bardem team up with Cormac McCarthy once again in The Counselor. The last time these two worked together, Bardem walked away with an Oscar for his performance as Anton Chigurh – a character as evil as his haircut – in No Country for Old Men.

In The Counselor, Bardem plays Reiner, an insecure drug lord with a haircut that screams “insecure drug lord.” He also has a weak spot for cheetahs, aka Malkina, played by Cameron Diaz. While reviews for the movie are scarce, one can expect Bardem to deliver top notch acting. Javier is known for getting out of his comfort zone to work a role. Before No Country For Old Men, he could barely speak English, didn’t like violence, and was afraid of driving. All of which he did with gusto in that award winning role. For The Counselor, I can only imagine how difficult it was for the poor bastard to get passionate with Cameron Diaz while his wife, Penélope Cruz, was on set. C’mon seriously, how good of a life can a man have? Javier gets paid make out with Cameron Diaz and his gorgeous wife can only say, “it’s art.”

The Counselor isn’t the first time Bardem has worked with Cruz. According to the gossip mill, the couple fell in love during the 2007 filming of Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona, a movie about Bardem’s love affair with María Elena, played by Cruz, and Christina, played by Scarlett Johansson. Seriously, Javier? Scarlett Johansson? Penélope Cruz? Cameron Diaz? Your life is that good?

You know what, people, see the movie, or don’t. Doesn’t matter. Javier’s going to be just fine. I wonder what he’s doing right now? Probably sipping sangria and eating baby squid tapas while watching the sun set over the Mediterranean. Some guys…
