Michelle Rodriguez On Hollywood’s Diversity Problem

Fast and Furious actress Michelle Rodriguez had an interesting take on Hollywood’s diversity problem that made a lot of people angry. When TMZ asked her about a rumor that she was going to be the next Green Lantern she said,

“That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Because of this whole ‘minorities in Hollywood’ thing … It’s so stupid. Stop stealing all the white people’s superheroes. Make up your own.”

Many people took to Twitter to decry what sounds like her call for all superhero movies to stay as lilly white as freshly fallen snow. Hollywood and the comic book industry have made some small changes here and there to seem more diverse. For example Sam Jackson playing Nick Fury in the Avengers movies. The comic industry has done its part by making a female Thor and a Latino Spiderman. Still, most comic book movies are still pretty White. So, I’m not exactly sure what Michelle is talking about. So, she clarified,

“What I really meant was, ultimately at the end of the day there’s a language. And the language that you speak in Hollywood is successful franchise. And I think that there are many cultures in Hollywood that are not white that can come up with their own mythology … I’m just saying that instead of trying to turn a girl character into a guy or instead of trying to turn a white character into a black character or Latin character, I think that people should stop being lazy, and that people should actually make an effort in Hollywood to develop their own mythology.”

I totally get that. Hollywood and the comics industry should come up with new characters that are diverse from the start. After all, most comic book characters were created from the 30’s-60’s and that was not exactly a time that cared about ethnic diversity. But the reality is that Hollywood is always looking for a sure thing and these old tried and true characters are proven money makers as they’ve been around for decades. I personally have no problem with them making the heroes we know and love into other races or women. Diversity is important. I can’t wait for Latino Batman, Batmang.
