MTV Latin America To Launch “Acapulco Shore”

MTV Latin America has announced that it will launch a Spanish language version of the infamous train wreck the Jersey Shore set in Acapulco. The show will feature several young Mexicans that are all put in a house in the beach resort town of Acapulco for some sexy hijinks. Maria Iregui, brand manager for MTV Latin America said of the new show, “Drama, friendship and partying — the hallmarks of the MTV franchise are all encapsulated in ‘Acapulco Shore’.” Fantastic. I’m sure there will be lots of sexy goings on. The question is whether or not the show will find characters as compelling as The Situation, Snooki, and JWoww. Surely, somewhere in Mexico there is a La Situacion just waiting to show off his abs to an adoring public. Perhaps under a bridge somewhere they will be able to find someone as “interesting” Snooki.

The show will air in the U.S. on Tr3s in September, so we have that to look forward to. Some might say that the show will probably enforce a lot of Latino stereotypes. One of the many, MANY criticisms of the Jersey Shore was that it painted such a horrible picture of Italian-Americans. I guess the hallmark of the franchise is to hold up a mirror and show the ugly underbelly of a subculture. We see in it the worst in us. We should take it as a learning experience.
