Netflix Announces First Spanish Language Original Series

Netflix announced today that they will be producing an original series in Spanish. The project will be helmed by Mexican director Gaz Alazraki whose film Nosotros Los Nobles (We Are The Nobles) was a huge hit out of Mexico. The show, which hasn’t been named yet, will be a satirical take on the world of professional soccer. The program will consist of thirteen episodes that is set to be released all at the same time so you can binge watch it instead of going outside and interacting with other people. Netflix has gotten into the business of creating content over the last couple of years with big hits like Orange Is The New Black and the fourth season of Arrested Development. It’s a smart move to create an original series in Spanish. American Latinos are among the most jacked in people and young Latinos in particular get a lot of their content online. Not to mention the windfall it will be for all of Latin America.

One of the reasons that Spanish language programming is doing better than mainstream English shows on broadcast TV is that there aren’t really a lot of outlets that offer Spanish shows. Univision and Telemundo are the only Spanish networks out there and for the most part they’ve done well for themselves. I think you are going to see both these networks and companies like Hulu and Netflix creating more and more online content. Latinos are the largest growing demographic in the United States, although native born American Latinos don’t speak as much Spanish as their immigrant parents or grandparents. It will be interesting to see how the market grows over the coming years.
