Oscar Isaac In “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Shows Latinos Can Be In Sci-Fi

Don’t worry, I’m not going to give away any spoilers for The Force Awakens. I’m not a monster. What I am going to say, besides the fact that I friggin’ loved the movie, was that it made me very happy to see Oscar Isaac in the Star Wars universe. Of course, we all know that Isaac is an amazing actor and he was great as the dashing pilot Poe Dameron. But it was just the fact that he was there onscreen that made me happy. A Latino in Star Wars was something that I didn’t get when I was a kid. I was Caucasian so I could kinda identify with Han and Luke, but it still would have been nice to see someone whose mom calls to yell at him in Spanish once a week in a galaxy far far away. Isaac is half Cuban and half Guatemalan and balanced out the multi-ethnic cast.

This movie succeeds at having a Black person, a woman, and a Latino as their main new characters without coming off as tokenism. I know a lot of internet racists were pissed off about this but they can go F themselves. Representation is important and now a whole generation of kids of color and women can see that they too can be heroes in the Star Wars galaxy.
