Oscars Voters Are Mostly Old Crusty White Dudes

In news that comes as a surprise to no one, (especially people like me who work in the film business), the people who vote on the Oscars are old crusty White dudes. You may have wondered how the Oscars work, so let me explain. The Academy Awards are given out every year by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Who is in this academy? Well, there are no official public lists, but it is basically everyone who has any clout in Hollywood, which is about 5,700 people. You get invited to join and are then eligible to vote. Those votes are tallied by the firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers and then everyone gets dressed up and gets statues of naked golden dudes. Well, it turns out that the voters are not exactly indicative of the viewing public.

According to a study done by the Los Angeles Times, 94% of Oscar voters are White, 77% are men, and the median age is 62. Blacks and Latinos make up only 4% of the total number of people in the Academy. Most of that 4% are actors and not the real decision makers. You ever wonder why shows like “Work It” get put on the air or why the brown-face minstrel shows of George Lopez and Carlos Mencia get green lit? Or how about the recent clueless mess of ignorance that was the Latin music episode of “Glee“? Or, for that matter, why only one woman has ever won best director, (Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker”)? It’s because Hollywood is still run by old White dudes.
