Peru Bans Eating Pussy Cats

I’ll start by saying this: I understand pride in honoring your past. Also, I’m in no real position to judge another culture for doing something “strange” – I’m from a country that puts makeup on five-year-old girls and parades them around in front of southerners. I’m from a culture that has deified the cat, and, full disclosure, I’m a cat person. Now let’s get to it.

Say goodbye to the Festival Gastronomico del Gato – Gastronomic Festival of the Cat. A judge in Peru recently put an end to La Quebrada’s yearly festival, which involved cooking and eating 100 cats. Yep. A festival of cat eating. The annual feast started as a way of honoring the town’s founders, who survived the first few years of their settlement by living off cat meat.

I think “survive” is the key word there. When it comes to survival, people tend to do things they aren’t proud of and would like to forget forever immediately after the fact, let alone be reminded of every year. There’s a reason we don’t have a festival built around the Donner Party’s triumph over nature – sure, they survived because they ate human meat, but I’m not going to celebrate them every year by throwing fastballs at a dunking booth while munching on some deep fried Steve.

The festival has numerous supporters, who claim the cat meat is purrfectly fine. I don’t have a problem with that. What I do have a problem with are the few who claim that cat meat “helps boost fertility and treats bronchitis.”

I’m guessing their claim has not been backed up with any kind of science. Also, if you’re from a town that had to eat cats to survive, why would you want to eat something that boosts your fertility? More mouths to feed means more cats to eat means more mouths to feed. Plus, if you’re allergic to cats, wouldn’t attending a cat festival will make your bronchitis worse?

Alright. I’ll get off my soapbox. I’ve got a marathon of Toddlers and Tiaras to watch. Here’s a something to take the edge off.
