Pope Francis To Celebrate Mass At U.S./Mexico Border

Pope Francis, the first Latino pontiff, will be visiting Mexico in February and will conduct a mass at the U.S./Mexico border at Ciudad Juarez. Pope Francis has been an outspoken advocate for undocumented immigrants and others who wish to come to the U.S. so it is not a big surprise that he would make this gesture. The mass will be held at Benito Juarez stadium, which is right next to the border. Tickets for the mass are being distributed on both sides of the fence. The archdiocese of Ciudad Juarez, Juarez, and El Paso are all coordinating the logistics of thousands of pilgrims gathering at the heavily guarded border. No word on if the Pope will visit the fence itself, but I can totally see him doing that.

Pope Francis will do what he does wherever he goes which is to bring people together. He’s a unifier, whether you are Catholic or not. The guy is just plain charismatic. At a time when The United States is becoming more anti-immigration, both against Latinos and Muslims, Pope Francis’ message is one of compassion for immigrants. It will be interesting to see what comes of his visit.
