Puerto Rico Gets A Superhero In La Borinqueña

La Borinquena book title copy

Puerto Rico’s economic woes are no joke. They defaulted on their loans and have more coming up and the U.S. Congress is doing nothing. If there was ever a time when the island needs a hero it’s now. Enter a new superhero called La Borinqueña. She is the creation of comic book artist Edgardo Miranda-Rodriquez who was commissioned to create a comic for New York’s Puerto Rican Day Parade. The character is the alter ego of Marisol Rios De La Luz, who has the powers of nature at her disposal to save Puerto Rico from disasters. She wears a costume that looks like the Puerto Rican flag and looks pretty badass.

Not only is she a Latina superhero, which is plenty rare, but she’s also a strong woman character. That’s even rarer. Representation is important and to see a Puerto Rican character kicking ass it inspires the youngings to do the same. Now if only someone would come up with a Cuban hero named Cubita or something to solve Cuba’s woes. Maybe I should do it?
