Red Sox Pen $72M Deal With Cuban Defector Rusney Castillo

Recent Cuban defector outfielder Rusney Castillo has just penned a seven year 72.5 million dollar deal with the Red Sox. This is the biggest contract ever with a Cuban player. Castillo is REALLY good. Before he left Cuba he was batting .325 and was known for his speed and ability to play various positions in the outfield. The 27-year-old player defected from Cuba last December and was quickly scouted as a potentially amazing MLB player. He joins fellow Cuban Yoenis Cespedes in the outfield. There are more Cuban player playing in the Major Leagues now than ever before. While their numbers are still dwarfed by Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, and Panamanians, they are one of the fastest growing segments of Latino players in Baseball.

I’ve been to Cuba and I can tell you that they truly live up to their reputation as Baseball fanatics. They live and breathe the sport and discuss, (fight), about it ad nauseum. Cuban Baseball players live better than most Cubans but they still have to have other jobs the rest of the year and live nowhere near as high off the lechon as the players do here. Can you imagine going from just scraping by on a crappy government stipend to 72.5 million dollars in less than a year? You can argue the merits of capitalism, but as far as baseball goes it certainly pays better.
