Remembering Jenni Rivera On The Anniversary Of Her Death

It’s been one year since the world lost the great Jenni Rivera and artists and friends are celebrating her legacy. A new album will be released along with an accompanying DVD of her last concert in Monterrey. It was after this show that Jenni passed away in a tragic plane crash in Northern Mexico. Recent investigations into the crash cite the pilot and plane being very old as a probable reason for the accident. Her family worked with the record company for most of the past year to produce the compilation. Tonight there will be a concert in Mexico in her honor with guests like Tito el Bambino and Marisela called “Jenni Rivera Lives!”. Also in the works is a biopic starring her daughter Chiquis. The film is based on a memoir that Jenni wrote that was published posthumously that tells of her struggles with abuse, rape, and a bunch of other not fun stuff and how she got to be the star she became.

When Jenni died I couldn’t help but connect her tragic death in my mind to that of Selena twenty years ago. Not since Selena’s murder had I seen such an outpouring of grief from the Mexican-American community in the U.S. Maybe it’s because they should have had many more years of success and great music ahead of them. Or maybe it’s just the loyalty that their fans feel when one of their own hits it big. Either way, Jenni left us too soon and we hope that wherever she is that she knows we’re still enjoying her music. I will, (figuratively), put dos botellas de mezcal on your grave, Jenni.
