Reporter Mistakes Samuel L. Jackson For Lawrence Fishburne

A reporter mixed up Samuel L. Jackson and Lawrence Fishburne in an interview for the new Robocop movie. KTLA entertainment reporter Sam Rubin was conducting a remote interview with Jackson when he asked a very very stupid question. Rubin said, “Did you get a lot of reaction from that Super Bowl commercial?” The only problem: Sam Jackson didn’t have a super bowl commercial. Rubin was referring to the KIA ad in which Lawrence Fishburne reprized his Matrix role as Morpheus. Jackson responded with a tirade worthy of Julius from Pulp Fiction minus the swearing. He said,

“I’m not Laurence Fishburne. We don’t all look alike. We may be all black and famous, but we all don’t look alike. You’re busted…There’s more than one black guy doing a commercial. I’m the ‘What’s in your wallet?’ black guy. Morgan Freeman is the other credit card black guy. You only hear his voice though so you probably won’t confuse him with Laurence Fishburne.”

Rubin later apologized for his mistake on the air. I’ll admit that sometimes I have misremembered which actors starred in different movies. For example Bill Pullman and Bill Paxton are the same person as far as I’m concerned. But that has more to do with their names and the fact that they both like to make crappy movies than anything else. This was clearly exactly what Jackson thinks it is: Rubin can’t tell Black people apart. The really inexcusable thing is that an entertainment reporter A) Doesn’t know the difference between these two great actors and B) That he didn’t do his research before the interview. A simple Google search would have told him that Fishburne was Morpheus. Maybe Rubin will get fired. As Jackson said, “You’re the entertainment reporter for this station? And you don’t know the difference between me and Laurence Fishburne? There must be a very short line for your job.”
