Rick Santorum Tells Puerto Rico That They Need To Speak English

Rick Santorum is in Puerto Rico today. He declared that if Puerto Rico wants to become a state, they have to speak English. Yeah, we know. He said, “As in any other state, you have to comply with this and any federal law. And that is that English has to be the main language.” Santorum, who is notoriously anti-immigration and anti-multiculturalism, is trying to woo Puerto Rican voters. Puerto Rico is a territory and doesn’t actually vote for president. However, they do take part in presidential primaries and they also have delegates which Santorum is hoping will go his way. In Puerto Rico, some people would like to join the U.S. as its 51 state. Do this at your own peril, Boricuas.

First of all, there is no federal law nor does every state have English as its official language. So, right there you see he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. English and Spanish are both taught in schools in Puerto Rico, but most people speak Spanish at home. That’s because, though they are an American territory, they are also a Latin American nation. Puerto Ricans have always tried to hang on to their identity and culture in spite of being kinda part of the United States. One of the major ways in which they have kept their heritage is because they continue to speak Spanish. Santorum wants Puerto Ricans to assimilate, but not to actual American society which is multicultural. He wants Puerto Rico to conform to W.A.S.P. American culture and society. Puerto Rico, if you follow down this path you will lose a lot of what makes you unique.
