RIP Phillip Seymour Hoffman

The great American actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman was found dead yesterday in his apartment in New York City. The 46 year old actor died of an aparent drug overdose and was found in the bathroom with a needle still in his arm. Hoffman had kicked his heroin habit 20 years ago but had apperantly relapsed into using again. He is survived by his three kids with partner Mimi O’Donnell. Fans gathered for an imprompto vigil outside of his Greenwich Village apartment when the news of his passing hit the news. Hoffman is considered by many people, (including me), to be one of the most talented actors of his generation. I remember first becoming aware of his tremendous talent in Boogie Nights and thinking that he’d go far. Hoffman was in production for the latest Hunger Games film at the time of his death.

Hoffman is just the latest star we’ve lost to drug abuse. It just goes to show that even a person that has “everything” can still struggle with some very real inner demons. He seemed like a nice guy and his co-stars had nothing but nice things to say about him. I used to see him around the Village all the time and even had a brief conversation with him once at a coffee shop. He was very nice and, unlike many Hollywood stars, didn’t think himself too good to talk to a fan. Hoffman played the everyman in his roles with as much spirit and range as he did more over the top characters like his portrayal of Truman Capote. Whatever the performance, you totally believed him because it came from a place of truth. He never phoned it in and was always on point. He will be sorely missed.
