Salma Hayek Teaches Us Mexican Slang

They say that language is fluid and that it is constantly evolving. I think you can most see this in the different dialects and slang found across Latin America. We all started with the Castilian Spanish of the conquistadors but five hundred years later they different countries have their own distinct flavor. I grew up in Texas and most of my friends growing up were Mexican-American. I learned very quickly that the Cuban slang I heard at home was very different than what my Mexican compatriots spoke. Mexican Spanish is very unique and has a vocabulary particular to the region born from the mix of indigenous languages, African dialects, and old school Spanish.

In this video produced by Vanity Fair, Mexican movie legend Salma Hayek gives us a lesson on the particulars of Mexican slang. !Que Pedo!
