How Sean Penn Unwittingly Led To El Chapo’s Capture

We told you over the weekend about the capture of the notorious narco boss Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman being captured by Mexican authorities. We also wrote about how one of the things that gave him away was him contacting producers and actors to create a biopic about his life. It gets even weirder than that. One of the main things that led to his arrest was actually a secret interview conducted by Hollywood actor Sean Penn for Rolling Stone magazine. Why Sean Penn and not someone with some actual experience as a journalist is a mystery. For whatever reason El Chapo wanted Penn specifically. The meeting was arranged by Mexican actress Kate Del Castillo who El Chapo had contacted to help him make his movie. Penn and Castillo were brought into his camp in total secrecy and he spent 7 hours interviewing El Chapo who bragged about being th ebiggest drug trafficker in the world.

But what Penn suspected but didn’t know was that Mexican authorities were tracking him and that his interview with El Chapo would lead, through no help from Penn directly, to El Chapo’s capture. I can’t help but wonder if Penn would have given up where El Chapo was. Seeing as he had months to do it, it seems unlikely. This is a journalistic grey area, I guess. On the one hand it’s a good scoop and the subject is trusting you not to betray them but on the other hand you know where one of the most dangerous men in the world is. Don’t you have a duty to turn him in and possibly save thousands of lives? My judgment is a bit colored by my blinding hatred for Sean Penn. Who does this guy think he is?
