Sean Penn Won’t Apologize For Oscar Joke

Sean Penn got in hot water with a lot of people, (including us), with his green card joke at the Oscars. In case you don’t remember, Penn was giving the award for Best Picture and when he opened the envelope and read Alejandro Iñarritu’s name he said, “Who gave this guy a green card?” Social media went nuts condemning Penn for making light of the immigration crisis. Iñarritu said he wasn’t offended because Penn is an old friend and they josh each other that way. Penn hit back over the weekend saying,

“I have absolutely no apologies, in fact, I have a big (expletive) you for every…anybody who is so stupid not to have gotten the irony when you’ve got a country that is so xenophobic. If they had their way, you wouldn’t have great filmmakers like Alejandro working in this country. Thank god we do.”

No Sean, we get the irony. We understand your joke because we are not as stupid as you make us out to be nor are you as smart as you think you are. It’s not a question about whether or not the joke is funny, (it’s not), or whether Iñarritu was insulted, (who cares?) The point is that when you say stuff like that it gives ammunition to the idiots who agree with that kind of sentiment. Also, green card jokes are cheap and easy, so you aren’t as witty as you think you are either. As a celebrity that people look up to, (and they do for some reason), you have a responsibility to not say crap like that. People, whether you like it or not, take that stuff seriously. So, go back to smugtown and climb back up on your high horse and shut the hell up.
