Sonia Sotomayor Heads Ball Drop In Times Square New Years Eve

Sonia Sotomayor, one of our favorite ladies, will be in charge of the ball drop in Time Square tomorrow at 11:59 pm. Sotomayor will push the button activating the glittery ball to begin its minute long countdown to 2014. Sonia is a native to the Bronx so this is a bit of a homecoming for her. What is New Years Eve without the ball drop in Times Square? I imagine if the mechanism that controls the ball ever breaks, time as we know it would come to a screeching halt. So, the importance of this job cannot be overstated. Luckily, this year they chose a competent and intelligent person for the task.

Sotomayor was sworn in as the first Latina Supreme Court justice in 2009. The court still mostly looks like a bunch of rich old White dudes in black robes, but still it’s progress. Sotomayor is an amazing speaker and I hope she’s given a chance to say a few words. I saw her give a commencement address at NYU a couple of years ago and it was seriously the best graduation speech I’ve ever heard. We’re really glad here at Tu Vez that the Times Square people chose her and not someone lame like Justin Bieber or Phil Robertson from Duck Dynasty to man the button. We’re going to take it as a positive sign for the New Year that a Latina is at the helm of the ball.
