Netflix To Stream Telenovelas In Latin America

Move over, Jesus. Netflix is converting Latin America to streaming! Netflix, whose stock dropped 5% on Tuesday, is doing what so many companies have done for years – look to Latin Americans to create a product on the cheap. Aiding in Netflix’s quest to dominate the streaming world are Televisa and Azteca– Mexico’s two biggest broadcasters.


Telenovelas Triumph Over American Soaps. Here’s Why.

This past month two iconic American soap operas, “All My Children” and “One Life To Live”, have been cancelled. The reason is low ratings. People just aren’t watching the stories like they used to. There are a million channels now and most households have two working parents, so the bored housewife watching soaps is becoming extinct.

Let’s face it. There is some weird stuff on the Spanish channels. Old men dressed like children, 5-hour blocks of variety show weirdness, and novelas about pirates are all par for the course. In our opinion, however, the creepiest show we’ve ever seen is the children’s telenovela Carita de Angel.

In the history of telenovelas, no one story has been more popular and/or remade more times than the muy caliente period piece Corazon Salvaje. This sweeping tale of ripped bodices, pirates, and forbidden sexy kisses on a beach has been made into four different telenovelas and two movies, the most recent being in 2009.
