Texas Sends 1000 National Guard Troops To Border

In a deeply controversial move, Texas governor Rick Perry has deployed the national guard to secure the Texas border. Over 1000 guardsmen are expected to amass along the border fence. The idea is to deter people from crossing over and to “aid” with securing the undocumented, (particularly the children), when they do reach the border. Undocumented immigration has grown particularly among poor children fleeing violence in Central America. The Obama administration has been slow to act on what is a growing humanitarian crisis. But is the answer to send 1000 troops to keep out a bunch of children? Rick Perry seems to think so. He said,

“I will not stand idly by while our citizens are under assault and little children from Central America are detained in squalor. We are too good a country for that to occur.”

I appreciate that he feels he needs to do something to abate the crisis but I seriously doubt deploying troops is the answer. What I know is that this attitude of xenophobia is un-American. My family came here as refugees fleeing oppression and death in their own country and were welcomed into the U.S. Aren’t we the country that is supposed to take in the “poor huddled masses yearning to breath free”? It is the second age of the Know Nothings.
