Texas Threatens To Cut Funding To Sanctuary Cities

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott makes a statement during a news conference, Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, in Dallas. Abbott announced his office is suing the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission over what he says is “bullying” of Texas companies over the hiring of felons. The lawsuit is the 30th filed by Abbott’s office against the administration of President Barack Obama. (AP Photo/Tony Gutierrez)

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is threatening to cut all state funding to any schools or cities that establish a sanctuary status for immigrants. He Tweeted,

“Texas will not tolerate sanctuary campuses or cities. I will cut funding for any state campus if it establishes sanctuary status.”

Texas, for as conservative as it is, has always been a safe place for immigrants and not only those from South of the border. Texas has the largest Muslim immigrant population in the country. My hometown of Houston is an incredibly diverse and eclectic city with people from all over the world. My family was certainly welcome there when they came from Cuba in the 70’s. Even Republican governors like George W. Bush and Rick Perry took a softer view on immigration. No Greg Abbott.

He has been cracking down on all kinds of immigration, not just undocumented people from Mexico. He has long wanted to ban Syrian refuges from coming to Texas with little success. In truth this is largely an idle threat. He isn’t and probably couldn’t cut funding to cities like Houston or Austin nor to public schools like The University of Texas with existing laws. It’s just a temper tantrum but one we will be seeing more and more from hard line anti-immigration Republicans as the age of Donald Trump begins.
