Zombies in Latin America

Halloween and DIA DE LOS MUERTOS is just around the corner, so why not write a post on ZOMBIES!!!!!!!! Zombies have been terrorizing us for many decades with such classics like 1932 White Zombie, George A. Romero’s The Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. With the popularity of the TV series, The Walking Dead, zombies have made a strong come back. It seems that everywhere you turn you see zombies in video games, movies, and commercials.

But zombies are not only found in the US, they are also all over Latin America. In Cuba we find the movie, Juan de los Muertos, developed in La Habana and directed by Alejandro Brugues. This film has all the classic elements of action, blood, gore and plenty of decomposed corpses al estilo a la Cubana. The main character takes advantage of the zombie plague and starts a business with a great slogan, “Juan of the Dead, we kill your loved ones.”

In Mexico we see the TV series Distrito Mictlán, which begins three months after a strange infection befalls Mexico City. This series is an independent project written and directed by Kiko Morah, and produced and co-created by Rocco Portillo.

We also find the web series Crónicas de Supervivencia Zombie, produced and developed by students of the University of Baja California Mexico. Through their YouTube channel, the students presented this project where their main objective is to teach the viewer how to survive a zombie apocalypse.

So next time you find yourself south of the border and see a zombie, no le pienses mas, ve por tu machete y echatelo.
