This Week On Being Latino: “Coconut,” The OTHER C-Word

Being Latino, the largest Latino community on Facebook, is a communication platform designed to educate and connect all peoples across the global Latino spectrum. They also have a fascinating online magazine. Every week, we’ll be featuring a story we feel you should read.

True story: When we went to college, most Latinos on campus called us a “coconut,” a somewhat derogatory term used by Latinos to describe other Latinos who think they’re white (brown on the outside, white on the inside). It always boggled our mind that despite the fact that our Spanish is/was flawless (something the people insulting us couldn’t claim). In our first selection from our friends over at Being Latino, Cristopher Rubio revisits the perils of calling other Latinos the c-word.
