This Week On “Being Latino”: The Virtues Of Spanish

Being Latino, the largest Latino community on Facebook, is a communication platform designed to educate and connect all peoples across the global Latino spectrum. They also have a fascinating online magazine. Every week, we’ll be featuring a story we feel you should read.

Being Latino staff writer Eric Jude Cortes wrote a very interesting piece earlier this week in which he implores Latino parents to teach their kids Spanish. For someone like me, whose mother doesn’t speak English, I had no choice but to fluently know my heritage’s tongue. In that regard, I feel like I’m more of an exception to the rule. I know too many second generation Latinos who don’t speak Spanish properly or at all. While I don’t think this makes them less Latino, I do find it to be a a little sad from a cultural standpoint. Cortes agrees with me, and enumerates other great reasons why it’s important to pass on Spanish to your kids. Check his piece out.
