Tom Perez Elected DNC Chair

Former Labor Secretary Tom Perez beat out progressive favorite Keith Ellison to be the next chair of the Democratic National Committee. The vote came down to 235 for Perez and 200 for Ellison. Perez now has the daunting task of putting back together a fractured and demoralized Democratic party that is still reeling from their loss of both the House and Senate as well as Donald Trump’s upset presidential victory. Perez is seen as a safe choice. He is not as progressive as Ellison and was an Obama appointee. Ellison had particular favor among those that had supported Bernie Sanders in his run for president last year.

The question will be whether playing it safe is what the Democrats should be doing. After all, after the trouncing they took it is pretty obvious that the old way of doing things isn’t going to work anymore. If people had been satisfied with the establishment Democrats represented by Perez and Hillary Clinton then the election would have had a much different turnout. Ellison might have helped invigorate a party that is barely coasting by. But if you look at the Democratic base, the ones marching int he streets and opposing Trump it is clear that they want more dynamic leadership. Perez just isn’t that guy.
