The Trump Administration Revoking Passports From Latino Citizens

The Trump administration has started cracking down on American born Latinos by revoking their passports or even deporting them at the border. Yeah, you read that right. These are American citizens, most of them born in the United States, that are having their federal identification taken away, are being harassed and detained, and in some cases deported simply because they are Latino. This is because of an idea based on the racist paranoia that pervades the entire Trump administration, that Latinos have largely falsified their documents from birth. In a Washington Post article they write,

“The Trump administration is accusing hundreds, and possibly thousands, of Hispanics along the border of using fraudulent birth certificates since they were babies, and it is undertaking a widespread crackdown on their citizenship …

In some cases, passport applicants with official U.S. birth certificates are being jailed in immigration detention centers and entered into deportation proceedings. In others, they are stuck in Mexico, their passports suddenly revoked when they tried to reenter the United States. As the Trump administration attempts to reduce both legal and illegal immigration, the government’s treatment of passport applicants in South Texas shows how U.S. citizens are increasingly being swept up by immigration enforcement agencies.”

So, let’s put this in perspective. Let’s say that my mom, an undocumented immigrant, and I walk up to passport control at the border or at an airport. I was born in Houston, TX and am therefor a natural-born American Citizen. My mother was born in Cuba but got asylum in the 60’s and became an American citizen in the 70’s. Then we have an immigrant who came from a Latino country with falsified documents. That means that all three of us are in danger of being detained, deported, or have our documents taken away simply because we are Latino. The crucial thing to notice is that they aren’t doing this to people who are not Latino. For example, let’s say you have a Chinese or Indian name, (which are the largest immigrant groups in the country), they will not bother you. Only if you are Latino.

THAT, my friends, is open discrimination.
