If Trump Builds A Wall, The Next Generation Will Tear It Down

I saw a sign at the 2nd annual Women’s March this past weekend that made me think. A young woman held a sign that said, “If you build a wall, my generation will tear it down.” It really made me think. Building a border wall along the U.S. and Mexican border was the cornerstone of Donald Trump’s campaign. He whipped all of those conservatives that hate brown people into a frenzy with a promise of kicking out anyone who was undocumented and preventing any further undocumented immigration. Chants of, “Build the Wall!” were common at his Nuremburg-like rallies. He cozied up to known Latino haters like Joe Arpaio. In fact, the border wall and DACA have led to the impasse that currently has our federal government shut down. Why is he so hot on this idea? Latinos aren’t even the largest immigrant group right now. They aren’t even the second largest, (the Chinese and the Indians are the largest respectively). It’s been shown that Latinos who came here undocumented don’t commit crimes at any higher rate than anyone else. So, then what gives? Bigotry. Xenophobia. Fear-mongering, that’s what.

Then I go back to that sign and I’m reminded of what happened in Germany in 1989. I was in 7th grade and I remember it well. My family, being Cuban refugees, hated them some communism so the day the Berlin wall fell was celebrated in my house. My grandfather ordered a piece of the wall as a momento, (which I now have in my living room). The Berlin wall was built in 1961 to divide the city into capitalist west and communist east. This was done by the generation that fought World War II and were currently battling the cold war. It was their children who tore down the wall. People in their twenties and thirties standing atop of the concrete barrier smashing it with hammers and pickaxes. If Donald Trump and the people he represents put up a wall keeping out entire groups of people, then I am sure our children will knock it down. As the old saying reiterated by Dr. King and Barack Obama says, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
