Trump Cabinet Will Have No Latinos

For the first time in thirty years a president’s cabinet will have no Latinos. Donald Trump, who will be sworn in as the 45th president of the United States tomorrow in Washington D.C., picked no Latino for his cabinet or any other top position in his administration. This is the first time in three decades that this has been the case. Even George W. Bush had Alberto Gonzalez as a member of his team. The truth is that Trump’s cabinet is overwhelmingly White and male. With the exception of Dr. Ben Carson and Betsy Devos, it’s pretty much wall-to-wall old crusty White dudes.

But can we really be surprised that Trump excluded Latinos from the table? His campaign was largely predicated on prejudice against Latinos. After all his most famous policy promise is that he is going to build a 25 billion dollar wall along the Mexican border to keep out Latinos from coming into the country, (even though immigration from Mexico is in the negative and Latinos are the third largest immigrant group after the Chinese and Indians). 70% of Latinos voted against him and the Latino group that had a 50% turnout for him, the Cuban-Americans, have two representatives (Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz) who HATE Trump.

This is a terrifying development, though not surprising. We are literally being left out of the discussion with a president who is openly hostile against us. Who will bend his ear in our favor? Jeff Sessions? Rick Perry? Doubtful.
