Trump Changes Stance On Cuba

Donald Trump changed his tone on Cuba on Friday at a rally in South Florida when he said he would undo President Obama’s increased openness to Cuba. Starting two years ago the president used a series of executive orders to go around the seemingly intractable trade embargo that has been in place since 1961. This has led to a new era of increased diplomatic ties and easing of travel restrictions to the Communist country. Donald Trump had previously said that he was fine with the changes Obama had made and was open to continuing opening up Cuba. But then he went to South Florida where the old hard line Cuban-Americans still hold sway and he had to change his tune if they want their vote. The hardliners vote pretty much exclusively with a candidate that vows to keep the status quo, hence why the emargo has stayed in place for 55 years. So, if Trump wants their vote he needs to take a hardline stance. He said,

“All of the concessions that Barack Obama has granted the Castro Regime were done through executive order, which means the next president can reverse them –- and that is what I will do, unless the Castro Regime meets our demands.”

He further said that he will “stand with the Cuban people in their fight against Communist oppression.” While it’s true that many younger Cuban-Americans are in favor with opening up Cuba, the old guard are stuck in the past…like most of my relatives. But it’s hard to know what Trump would actually do should he win. He’s not exactly that great about giving details of policy and quite often likes to say contradictory things to different audiences. Will the obvious business interests of investment in Cuba sway him? I’m sure he wants a Trump hotel on el Malecon. This is the most frightening thing about Donald Trump as president, there is no way to know what he will actually do about Cuba or anything else for that matter.
